ESL Program
ESL Program Guidelines
Westfields International School requires all students whose first language is other than English to enroll in an inclusive English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) Program, so they may successfully be mainstreamed in their regular English curriculum. ESL teachers work together with mainstream teachers to create a language-rich environment where students feel comfortable taking risks and where individual needs are accommodated. The ESL teacher supports students within his or her mainstream classroom for lessons delivered to the whole class. The Inclusion model is a team approach involving joint planning with grade level teachers.
The course includes:
A curriculum that is suitable to the individual needs and reflects the mainstream core curricula
A program that focuses on the student’s level of development and individualizes the program as necessary
A monitoring team: both ESL and mainstream teachers; students are included in whole class mainstream instruction to provide them opportunities to use the English language academically and in communicating with their classmates and teachers
A small class size
Pull Out
Students who have beginning to early intermediate language proficiency are placed in mainstream core classes but will be pulled out from these classes when additional support is required. The ESL pull out classes emphasize language skill development using topics and projects similar to those found in the core curricula and provide support with work in other subject areas.
