Our kinderGARDENERS' love for plants was 'cultivated' some more in this trip! The kids had such an energizing ride to the nursery, reciting poems and singing songs about planting and gardens. Everyone got a quick tour while the owner, Ms. Daisy, explained how she and her garderners prepare the soil so plants get the most nutrients. After this, the students got their hands dirty planting aubergines into rows of soil and marcotting their own plant. The ride on the tractor was another highlight as everyone screamed in excitement as they brushed along trees and spotted rows and rows of plants. Taking home a packet of seeds and their marcotted plant should keep our little kindies' love for nature alive, whether they are in school or at home.

This is the Field Notes: The 2nd Westfields International School Creative Writing Workshop and Fellowship, a 9th grade Creative Writing class culminating activity organized last March 18.
Before the workshop, each student submitted a poem written in English, along with a brief bio-note/introductory profile which was to be read before revealing the author of the piece.
Each piece was then critiqued by the students themselves with the guidance of Teacher Jay-vee Pangan, the creative writing teacher and workshop director, and Ms. Cindy P. Sicat, a graduate student of Literary and Cultural Studies at the Ateneo de Manila University.
Out of the 20 poems, three poems were hailed as outstanding, while two other poems received citation.
Jazhlee Kyro Louize Barrera’s poem entitled “Flight” was hailed the best piece, followed by Jerson Harry Estrada’s “Injustice” and Christopher Steven Holtz’s “When are you coming home?”. The poems “Hypocrisy” by Theresa Maude Fields and “Innocence” by Starrah Miah Gabasa received citation.
About the Panelists
Ms. Sicat also served as University and News Editor of The Angelite, the official student publication of Holy Angel University. She is now a faculty member and organizational adviser of The Phoenix, the official student publication of the City College of Angeles. She is also a member of College Editors Guild of the Philippines and Ateneo Center for English Language Teaching (ACELT). Our not-so-teeny toddlers were all at awe when they saw our friendly firefighters with their gear and trucks! They were finally able to see the real thing because they have been learning everything about the firehouse in the past 2 months. Our tots even showed off their growing vocabulary, naming all the tools and things that are used by firefighters. They even sang their firefighter song for our community helpers. We certainly hope this trip encouraged some of our toddler students to become firefighters someday.

Pinay teen wins ITF juniors title in Singapore

At the tender age of 17, Maika Jae Tanpoco has shown she can very well be the future of Philippine tennis.
Tanpoco summoned all her might to pull the rug from under Indonesian rival Efriliya Herlina 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 and clinch the Summit Planners Singapore ITF Junior Championships women’s title in Singapore recently.
“Maika played with a lot of heart and determination to capture her first title since joining the World Junior tour several years ago,” stated coach Manny Tecson. “This result showed that anything is possible and nothing is too late when a player is willing to change for the better.”
On her way to the finals, Tanpoco cruised past Saya Usui of Japan 6-0, 6-3 in the quarterfinals then gutted out a thrilling 7-5, 6-4 victory over Malaysian bet Nilar Win in the semifinals.
Meanwhile, the third-ranked Herlina stole the spotlight by ousting top-seeded Parminder Kaur of India, 7-6 (5), 6-2 in the semifinal, making her the odds-on favorite to win the crown over Tanpoco.
Tecson, who also coaches former junior netter and budding pro Jeson Patrombon, knew Tanpoco was in for a tough grind against Herlina, stating: “This player (Herlina) is very solid and complete. She can volley well, hits big on her ground strokes and moves well on the court.”
But the up-and-coming Filipina tennis wonder just wouldn’t be denied.
After Herlina dominated the first frame, rains suddenly washed out the court, leaving tournament organizers no recourse but to move the match-up indoors.
The abrupt break nearly took an hour and Tanpoco gamely pounced on the opportunity to make the needed adjustments.
Trailing 4-5 in the second set, Tanpoco utilized his effective serving to the hilt, taking the next two points–capped by a crisp backhand down the line–to take the frame and force a deciding set.
With momentum now clearly on her side, Tanpoco raced to a 3-to-nothing lead but Herlina strongly fought back and forged a 3-all count. The Filipina, however, sustained her aggressiveness in attacking the Indonesian, grabbing a 5-3 lead. In the ninth game and trailing 15-40, Herlina sailed a forehand long to the baseline, enabling Tanpoco to seize the crown.
“Her first reaction was to cry in happiness and was speechless because she never though this can happen to her,” related Tecson.
Meanwhile, Alberto Lim Jr. also shared the spotlight by teaming up with hometown bet Rohan Kamdar in beating the pair of Chinese Taipei’s Li-Lun Lee and Kuan-Chen Lin 6-4, 2-6, (10-8) for the boy’s doubles title.
Although unseeded, Lim and Kamdar gave the third-ranked duo of Japanese Leo Julien Sebaoun and Malaysia’s Colin Wei Ming Wong the big boot with a 6-2, 6-3 win in the semis before completing their glorious run in the finals.
Tanpoco, who turned 17 last month, has been competing in the ITF juniors circuit for almost a year now. This is her first title.
Lim, at 13 one of the youngest players on tour, previously reached the semifinals of a singles tournament.

MAIKA Tanpoco of the Philippines scored a huge win against Japanese Sanae Ohta, 6-2, 6-3, to enter the semifinals of the 2011 International Juniors Tennis Championship Junior’s Circuit Week 1 on Friday at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center in Manila.
Overcoming a 0-2 deficit and a slow start, Tanpoco employed impeccable forehand volleys and good serves in the second set on the way to her victory. She will battle Nastassia Rubel of Belarus in the girl’s singles semifinals.
“It’s a great day to score a win against a seeded player,” said the 16-year-old Tanpoco, referring to the second seed Ohta. “I need to play very hard against Rubel to make it to the finals. She is good too.”
But Tanpoco’s compatriots Tamitha Nguyen and Marian Jade Capadocia failed to make it to the semifinals of the event supported by the Philippine Investment Management Inc., ATP Head balls, Viva and Powerade.
Japanese Miki Kobayashi defeated the Filipino-Vietnamese Nguyen, 6-2, 6-3, while British Eden Silva clipped Capadocia 7-5, 6-2, in the quarterfinals. Kobayashi will meet Silva in the semifinals.
Capadocia booted out top seed Kanika Vaida of India in the second round on Thursday but was defeated by Silva.
In the boy’s singles play, Taiwanese Yu Cheng-Yu whipped Filipino Jurence Mendoza, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1, while Thai Wattanakul Singekrawee blanked Korean Ku-Keon Kang 6-2, 6-4 to make it to the semifinals.

"INVEST IN YOURSELF, EAT RIGHT"
Friday July 22 started out normally for the high school students at Westfields: seeing friends, walking around, etc. But soon it would prove to not be a regular day.
When the bell rang, instead of the normal Silent Sustained Reading, we all went to the stage area in front of the grade-school building and danced to the beat and rhythm of zumba, which is a fitness program that incorporates different dance moves like hip-hop and salsa. The zumba was lead by Teacher Lein and the Dance Club. It was very enjoyable to learn the moves and listen to the music.
After the zumba, everyone went to their regular classes, but the classes were only 30 minutes long. Before lunch, some sections had a last-minute practice before actually performing on-stage.
After lunch, the Nutrition Week culminating activity began. Here the students would display and perform what they had worked on during the week. The emcees were King Pineda and Cloie Hilomen, who introduced a nutritionally-themed song performed by the Performing Arts Club.
Then came the first competition: each section recited their own original poem, with the theme, “Invest in yourself, eat right.” The winner was Grade 9 Truth.
Next was the song contest, which had the same theme. The songs were a mix of original and familiar tunes, with original lyrics. It was all very entertaining. And the winner was Grade 9 Truth.
After that, our attention was turned to the Big Screen, on which was displayed a slide-show of photos of the week’s preparations, including those of cooking activities led by Teachers Tom and Heidi. The slide-show was compiled by Teacher Mao.
Also on the Big Screen we saw another competition: “commercials” about nutrition created by each section, and which got many laughs. The winning section was Grade 9 Truth (for the 3rd time!!).
There was also a bulletin board decorating contest, in which the sections tried to portray the merits of good nutrition through visual arts displayed on bulletin boards. And surprisingly the winner was some other section, Grade 7 Accountability.
Finally, we topped everything off with one of the best parts, the potluck. Many students brought fruits and vegetables, but some also brought some fruity Hawaiian pizza.
Fujian Normal University invited Westfields International School to attend the ASEAN High School Summer Camp in Fuzhou, China. Five (5) delegates (second year students Kamille de Jesus and Angelo Pineda, third year students Marcus Golding and Tiger Britt, and fourth year student Marlene Castro), together with their principal Ms. Volet de Jesus, had the opportunity to learn more of the Chinese language and culture during the Chinese Bridge. They were also given a chance to visit some places in Fuzhou as part of their cultural exchange. Eighteen students from around the Philippines, along with some students from Malaysia and Burma, attended the program from August 1-15, 2011.

4 Dec 2010 - Students from the Grade School literally showed their love to other kids by holding a Christmas Outreach Program at Holy Trinity School in Manibaug, Porac, Pampanga.
Students from Westfields International School shared their time with the regular students and other physically challenged students of Holy Trinity School. Physical disabilities did not deter all the students from sharing games, fun and laughter.
Westfields International School's Grade Schoolers learning to share.
